During the Renaissance, a new wealthy and educated social class emerged that began to commission works of art. In this context, artists became aware of their importance, sought to attain the same social status as their patrons, and defended painting as an intellectual activity, beyond the merely manual or artisanal.
Since the identity of the artist that was established during this period was predominantly male, for women, painting was more than just a profession: it represented a space from which they could reaffirm their identity as creators.
